Citric acid is an organic acid. It is found in citrus fruits and is a natural preservative and antioxidant. It is also used to give a sour taste to food. In biochemistry, it is an important intermediate in the citric acid cycle. It is a food acid with E number E330.

Salts and esters of citric acid are called citrates.

• Citric acid is used, among other things:
• to bring food to the correct acidity level (acidity regulator)
• to bring cosmetics to the right acidity
• as an aid in etching metals
• as a cleaning agent to remove or prevent limescale and algae deposits (e.g. on heat exchangers)
• for descaling household appliances, such as coffee machines
• to remove rust from metal objects
• as an odorless stop bath when developing photo prints
• as an anticoagulant in blood collection
• as (biological) toilet cleaner
