Canadian turmeric (Hydrastis canadensis) is an herb that was highly regarded by the American Cherokee for its positive influence on health. 'Hydrastis' refers to the Greek hydra meaning water. The plant can be found in the moist mountain forests where it grows best. Canadian turmeric gets its name from the golden yellow stripes visible on its bark. In English, the plant is also called Goldenseal because of these characteristics. The power of this plant manifests itself not only in its action but also in its root system that is ineradicable. Canadian turmeric contains the alkaloids hydrastine and berberine which make up 5% of the root.
